On February 5, 2010, a group of painters, sculptors, architects, writers, film makers, photographers, and musicians will hold an exhibition in a vacant building at 1017 West Main Street in Charlottesville, VA. Soon afterward, the building will be demolished.
Our curatorial goal is to assemble a coherent body of work that revolves around themes of obsolescence, weathering, and decay, as well as meditations on growth, rebirth, and the utility of discarded materials.
Drawings, paintings, architectural models, maps, diagrams, photographs, audio or video recordings, writing, sculpture, or other work that relates to the theme will be considered for inclusion.

Technosonics on tour!
TECHNOSONICS X -- BUILDING
The Virginia Center for Computer Music and the Program in Composition and Computer Technologies at U.Va. present an evening of experimental music, sound art and multimedia. A celebration of 10 years of the TECHNOSONICS Festival, the theme of BUILDING finds articulation and resonance in works by a diverse group of national and international composers. From sound collage formed of radio broadcasts collected round the world, to self-organizing music for networked laptopistes, to no-holds-barred musical robotics, to the life in a year of Jefferson's Rotunda. A prismatic take on BUILDING ranges from architectural to ideological space, from human communities to invented technological agents. Featured composers include Iannis Xenakis, Stephen Vitiello, Krzysztof Wolek, EMMI, and Steven Kemper -- as well as composers-in-residence Judith Shatin, Matthew Burtner and Ted Coffey.

The 2009 installment of Queering Sound again gathers together artists – with a non-exclusive curatorial focus towards gay, lesbian and post-gender-identified participants – who explore alternative avenues of expression through sound, the digital arts, noise and spoken word. Pyramid Atlantic will host two evenings of both established and upcoming local talents as well as serve to introduce Washington audiences to new sounds and visions. Compact discs, recordings, publications and other merchandise from contributors will be available for sale. Admission is $5.00 each night and available at the door. Doors open 30 minutes before performance. Pyramid Atlantic is located a three blocks south of the Silver Spring Metro (Red Line); Gated parking is available for free in front of the building. Lucent Phoenix Community Library! Grand Opening!
Located in the heart of the controversial arts district of Richmond's historic black neighborhood, Jackson Ward. In an area which has been undergoing what some business owners and city leaders would call a renaissance, the Lucent Phoenix will attempt to provide the tools needed for our neighbors to fight back the negative effects of gentrification and perhaps restore some of that historical fight and culture Jackson Ward is known to have had.
We invite you to attend our grand opening and to bring reading material and other resources that you believe will help us achieve our goal as a community resource center that the Jackson Ward neighborhood and the city of Richmond can be proud to have.

Repost: Announcing "ItSpace", A New Online Sound Installation
ItSpace creates a network of pages within the social networking site MySpace. Instead of featuring people, the pages feature everyday household objects. Each page has a photo of the object, a description, and most importantly, a 1-minute piece of music composed of recordings of the object being struck and resonated in various ways. All the pages, or objects, are 'friends' with each other, so that visitors who discover one object may jump to the others by clicking on the 'friends' pictures at the bottom of each page.
You are invited to create new ItSpace pages with pieces made from your own household objects and link those in as 'friends' of the original set of objects. You are also invited and encouraged to remix and combine existing objects into new musical compositions.
ItSpace is a 2007 commission of New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc., for the Networked_Music_Review. It was made possible with funding from the New York State Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.

TechnoSonics VIII, presenting cutting edge digital music and video, comes to LiveArts on Friday, November 9 at 8:00 p.m. This FREE concert brings you creative energies from UVA's supercharged composers-in-residence Matthew Burtner, Ted Coffey and Judith Shatin, as well as a brand-new video by UVA media artist Lydia Moyer, a new laptop improvisation by Scott Smallwood and sax brilliance by Michael Straus. Also on the program is an alchemical animation video and music collaboration by Kyoko Kobayashi and Todd Pitt.
This year's theme is MUSIC (In/Of/About) PLACE, focusing on how digital music and media can make vivid our experience of place. Matthew Burtner, just back from performances at the Stone and other New York venues, will perform his (dis)Locations with multimedia saxophone extraordinaire Michael Straus. Ted Coffey, whose multimedia installations with Rebekah Wostrel were recently shown at the 1708 Gallery in Richmond premieres a suite from his new work Lullabies & Protest Songs for chamber ensemble and live electronics. Judith Shatin, whose For the Birds was just performed on the Ear to the Earth Festival in New York, presents her Civil War Memories: Inside Out, a musicalization of a reading by historian Ed Ayers from a Civil War diary with the premiere of Lydia Moyer's haunting video. Returning from a Wave Farm residency in the Catskills, Scott Smallwood creates immersive sonic textures from ambient environmental recordings. And Kyoko Kobayashi uses music and animation to turn Todd Pitt's photography and guitar sounds into a swirl of ethereal noctilucence.
TechnoSonics VIII shows the ongoing creativity coming from the Virginia Center of Computer Music at the University of Virginia, where faculty, students, and our Technical Director wizard Dave Topper keep things hopping.
